Bayonne man charged in hit-and-run death of Jersey City man

A 50-year-old Bayonne man was arrested and charged Saturday after a Jersey City man was killed in a hit-and-run Thursday night in Bayonne.

James Nichols was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle collision, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Officeand was arrested in Jersey City around 12:30 a.m..

Bayonne resident James Nichols, 50, was arrested and charged in a hit-and-run incident that killed Jersey City resident John Hagans on Sept. 10.

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said an investigation found that Nichols was the driver of the car that struck Jersey City resident John Hagans as he was trying to cross Avenue C near 25th Street at about 10:20 p.m. Thursday.

According to Suarez, Hagans was then run over by a NJ Transit bus moments later while laying on the ground, after which police were notified.

Hagans, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene 20 minutes later, Suarez said.
